So Labour have won the general election a sizeable overall majority of seats and a low percentage of vote, a low overall national turnout and in fact, less votes than they received when Jeremy Corbyn was leader back in 2019.

There’s no doubt that along with many friends I’m celebrating the fact that 14 years of Tory rule have come to end, but already I’m looking further. I have little confidence in Starmer to lead any real change, despite the mandate that he now has.

A YouGov poll suggested that the majority of Labour voters only voted Labour to get the Conservatives out, only 5% voting because they support Labours policies and only 1% because they support Keir Starmer.

As my friend Dan Astin-Gregory  (who is speaking at this year’s Campout) observed “This combined with the low turnout overall, seems to indicate that the majority of people in Britain are disillusioned with the political status quo. In the wake of the election, many of us are getting together to explore our options.

We stood one Independent Trailblazer, Emma Wall in Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, who polled a creditable 1833 votes. With more time I am sure that we would have been able to field many more candidates.

Some key questions remain:

1 Should we actually be engaging with this outmoded, undemocratic system at all?

2 How do we change it, to bring in something fairer and more democratic?

3 How will this election shake up re-shape politics, if at all?

The Electoral Reform Society claimed it was “the most disproportional in British electoral history”.

As reported by the BBC “The gap between the share of total votes won by the winning party in the 2024 general election and the share of Parliamentary seats won is the largest on record, BBC Verify has found.

“This disparity has prompted renewed calls for reform of the electoral system, with Richard Tice of Reform UK complaining on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Friday of the “injustice” that his party had received millions of votes but only five seats in Parliament.

He said: “That is blatantly not a properly functioning democratic system - that is a flawed system. The demands for change will grow and grow.”

The Green Party’s co-leader Adrian Ramsay said he wanted to see a “fairer system” to ensure that “every vote counts equally”.

“On this measure Labour’s result in 2024 - with the gap between the share of votes won and the share of seats won of around 30 percentage points - is the most disproportionate on record.”

If we want democracy, we’re nowhere near it in this FPTP system. Historically the ‘moderate’ LibDems have been the biggest champions of proportional representation but they are currently the ones benefitting most from the current outmoded system. We can expect both Greens and Reform to be the ones wanting to transform our political system the most from the current parties but there is also a sense of a big rise in then influence of Independents which I see as a strong force in political change away from tribal loyalties.

For once, The Guardian has its finger on the pulse too in today's editorial

“Sir Keir Starmer enters Downing Street with a record number of seats and an immense majority on a lower turnout – and fewer votes – than that achieved in defeat in 2019 under Jeremy Corbyn (who was re-elected on Thursday as an independent MP).

“Such a lopsided result illustrates how undemocratic Britain has become and shows that proportional representation could become an issue around which dissent coalesces. The irony is that, after an energetic campaign highlighting important issues, the Liberal Democrats – the most consistent proponents of electoral reform – now have the number of parliamentary seats that reflects roughly the share of the vote that the party received: a record 71 in the Commons.”

“Sir Keir lost two of his putative cabinet ministers on election night. Both were sitting on five-figure majorities. Both were felled by emerging blocs of progressive voters who have rejected Labour’s caution”

“The scale of Sir Keir’s victory disguises a crisis of electoral legitimacy. Labour has won nearly two-thirds of the seats in the Commons with only a little more than a third of the vote. Compared with 2019, the party’s vote share in England remained static, while in Wales it actually dropped.”

Guardian editorial:  Sir Keir Starmer has the Commons strength to be daring. That means fulfilling hopes he did little to excite  https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/article/2024/jul/05/the-guardian-view-on-labours-landslide-becoming-the-change-the-country-needs

Labour had around 550,000 members under Corbyn, 380,000 in 2023 under Starmer, suspected as less today (currently unspecified). only 60% of possible votes were cast this year, with lots of no-shows. we saw a big shift from the two main parties, who got 90% of the vote in 2019, and around 55% of the vote this time. Corbyn’s Labour party had a bigger share of the vote at his peak (40%) than the current Labour party at the recent election (33%).

Well over two thirds (approximately 80%) of voters have elected not to vote or have even voted against Labour.

The whole picture feels unbalanced and unrepresentative. We urgently need to see the outcomes soon from our sowing of seeds in recent years for real systemic change.

Great news!

We have an amazing Trailblazer - Emma Wall, standing as our candidate for Kemptown and Peacehaven in Brighton, local mother of three, who's been so frustrated with our corrupt politics and the undemocratic system that she is putting her job and life to the side, to lead for change under the Trailblazer banner.

Rising from the grassroots, pushing for direct democracy, people assemblies and e-democracy, Emma wants to spread the message that we can all be empowered, that we all need to stand up and start building what we want to see: solid communities, a future that has hope and agency.

Brighton and Hove is a progressive city, so a new movement should get the support of some local people who will imagine what we can really achieve with a cooperative, collaborative attitude working together towards a common good.

The difference with Trailblazers is that it is all about heart-led values, not a dogmatic approach to issues. This breaks from traditional politics which focuses on solving issues through arguments and debate, rather than agreeing mutually beneficial principles on which everyone can build.

We have four weeks (which is a push!) to get this message to as many people that they need to show that they desperately want a different approach now. However small the step, it has to start somewhere and this is the spark! Emma is really excited about where this journey can lead and what we can do from within the system to help start the change. Let's see...! We hope to get support from everyone in the Campfire network, if you have ideas, enthusiasm or anything that you would like to pass on, or of course a 'cup of coffee' contribution would really help some flyer distribution, and get things off the ground!

Thanks everyone, we'll keep you tuned-in with updates...

We can't think of a better place to start a Haven for Peace - Peacehaven!

The UK General Election election has been announced for just over a month's time. July 4th. An appropriate Independents Day.

Are we content to sit back and settle for more of the same? Whether it's Labour, Lib Dems, Greens, Reform or whoever are playing the game, we can be assured that it will be a case of same old, same old, dancing in thrall to the tune of the WEF, WHO, UN or other globalists who are riding roughshod over governments.

Is now the time to look at alternatives?  We've been doing work over the last couple of years to put together a Trailblazers Manifesto which presents a range of common sense humanitarian principles, a Manifesto for Living in these precarious times.

The time is ripe for change this election, the divisive bi-party system has kept us in tribes, bound by the language of tired left/right politics. Many of us feel that we could do much better and want to stand for our communities, to face our collective future with hope instead of despair. Current MPs are standing down en masse, so now is the time to grasp that opportunity!

We all have different opinions, and the beauty of the Trailblazers movement is that people join together around collectively shared values rather than individual issues, so candidates have the freedom to stand for what they believe. It is the start of a truly participatory political system.

Politics is born from open discussion, and Trailblazers will listen and act from the heart, we won't be afraid to talk about the big issues that we face with courage, carrying a torch into this election. This is a call for independent candidates to stand, be a part of something exciting and join Trailblazers.

We have little over a month to make something happen.

Who would be prepared to stand up and Trailblaze new directions?

How to stand as a candidate at a general election

We envisage something way more fit for the times than dinosaur political parties.

Would you like to join us?

We are collectively working towards a framework for real and radical evolutionary change, right across society and its political infrastructure.

A framework is not easily formulated or agreed but we are actively seeking your involvement for discussion to realise co-created pragmatic ways of making these changes immediate and meaningful.

Here is our starter for thirty, based on early Trailblazing input and feedback.

This is very much a work-in-progress so please let us know if you'd like to become a Trailblazer and help create a much-needed shift.

The Path:

I  (Personal changes we can make)

Health Staying healthy, fit and trying to be happy and sane by looking after ourselves and keeping perspective. Looking after our kids and being mindful of the legacy that we are leaving, the world that they are inheriting. Being as conscious as possible as to what we consume as food / drink, how often and how we exercise, meditate, limiting screen time and exposure to toxic media and advertising sources.

Nature Connection Connecting with nature in its widest sense, learning from its cycles and rhythms, connecting with our own true nature.

Awareness and Empathy A shift from materialism to empathy, from greed and self-service to being in service for ‘the good of all’, done with an increased awareness of others, a slowing down, a imperative to keep 'the bigger picture' in our sights.

Sharpening Our Tools Overcoming learned helplessness, realising that we are the change, which we can all do via deep listening, use of language, being aware of where the power lies, pulling the wool from our own eyes and others, gently teaching others.

Finding Ourselves Creating space to find ourselves, to become the best versions of ourselves, to realise our true calling. Doing inner work and shadow work where necessary. If we are each to do the work and teach others, we need to be constantly learning and reappraising ourselves, to be resilient, open and present, to value our time.

Ethical & Resourceful Supporting and use co-operatives and local businesses rather than corporations.  To not invest in stocks and shares, pensions or savings...unless it's directly to a business with ethics that we know and trust. Use less, spend less, earn less: instead to recycle, upskill, to become independent and resourceful. Learning new things that are fun and rewarding. Deprogramming from consumerist trappings.

Self Sufficiency Ensuring our set up for food and energy is as resilient as possible. Buying local farm products and vegetable boxes. Stocking up on staples in case of shortages. Getting a bike working, stocking up on warm clothes, thermals and socks.

Heart-Centred Learning how to rest in the heart and what true courage is, increasing our awareness of the many processes that block us from staying heart connected. We will endeavour to create a map that identifies the blocks so we can recognise what causes us suffering and let go of these processes.

WE (What we can change in our local community)

Listening To Each Other Accepting the validity of challenging views, learning, practicing and teaching deep listening skills, the art of conversation, being fully present for others. Discussing and reflecting but not focusing on division and arguments. Not letting the 'divide and conquer' work, not allowing the polarities to drain our intent to actually get things done for ourselves and improve our own or our collective situation.

Imagining Re-imagining a future with more compassion and equality, a place where all can flourish, create and experience a productive and fruitful environment. Let's fully utilise our unique human gifts of imagination and let's do it with the gift of co-creation too.

The Commons A move away from trademarking, copyrights, intellectual property, enclosure and exploitation to creative commons, open source and community collaboration. Promote Right to Roam, land reclamation, community spaces for use by all.

Local Communities Build localised networked communities, pooling resources, skills exchanges, working within sight of a global interconnected framework.

Media Develop good practice with news formulation and dissemination.

Rights Keep an eye on legislation and stand up for future rights, organise our own information reference as an online resource.

Kindness Acts of kindness, putting love centre stage.

Our Legacy A call for humanity to make the continuation of life and the education of our future generations the primary consideration – before profit, power or personal ambition. To ask oneself, “will this action, this purchase or this statement, truly support a healthy, life-affirming future for our children and their children’s children?”  Overhauling outmoded education systems with a move towards towards experiential learning away from targets and grades.

REGION (Our country or regional reach)

Time to Stand Up Standing for election as a local representative of the ‘Trailblazer’ movement into post-politics (or supporting another who is standing) as we create a movement for the real systemic change that is so needed at so many levels

Systemic Change Working towards an overhaul of the political and social systems, away from party politics and polarity to a common-sense, grass roots democracy which looks to build consensus by maximising engagement (including digitally).

Mutual Support Exploring how we can reclaim the ideas around Universal Basic Income as our own, not some agenda from globalisation. In the right hands, this wouldn't be tool of technocratic control, it would liberate us from the drudgery of worthless jobs for corporations whilst promoting meaningful work, giving greater value to more mundane and often essential jobs. Looking to work collaboratively and share the workload, time bank or skills exchange. Many great wise elders have advocated the importance of work as part of the whole. UBI is a good way for creative people to blossom, whilst offering security to those at the bottom of the pile, who may spend most of their lives in a state of anxiety about money and survival.

Joining The Dots Seeking out and supporting anarchistic grass-roots politics and organisations that want to grow a healthy political alternative. Communicating with and encouraging others doing the good work in parallel. Building a network of Trailblazers, lighting Beacons to honour and make visible each group's contributions.

Freedom To Roam Campaigning to extend the Countryside & Rights of Way (CRoW) Act in England so that millions more people can have easy access to open space, and the physical, mental and spiritual health benefits that it brings. Researching and understanding ancient Land Law v current Maritime Law and how we can revert to the older, more egalitarian system which underpins our present day legal system by opting out and resisting.

WORLD (Joining the dots globally)

Universal Commonality Look to transcend restrictive notions of geographical borders and boundaries, restricted territories and passports wherever possible. Work towards a ‘No Nation’ world, not in the sense of a globalist agenda but in terms of finding commonality and agreed values worldwide. This is a controversial clause and needs full discussion and development.

The Big Shift Support the move from a ‘what’s in it for me?’ culture to one that puts the good of all and the planet at the centre.

Online Communities Build and promote non-corporate online platforms for ideas exchange and development globally, mutual support mechanisms and initiatives which reward their own members through measured input.

Money Strategically becoming as free as possible from Fiat currency and other biosecurity state controls.

Energy Explore a shift in energy use to renewables.

Finding the Common Ground Peace-building through techniques of conflict resolution, frameworks for mediation and reconciliation. Being fully aware of the Military Industrial Complex and its machinations.

Learning from Trailblazers Globally To learn from those local Trailblazing communities that are most fruitful and spread the word and methods of positive systemic social change around the world. Finding ways to bring those people and organisations doing the good work in 'parallel polis' to come together and unite to build a new movement, to move our values and actions centre stage to become the prevailing values.

Love Love Is The Answer.

Fun  never forget to have fun in the process!

Beyond the pitfalls and restraints of our current Institutions and Political systems we are choosing to stand as Trailblazers.

It was telling that almost everyone at Campfire Convention's Campout 2022 stuck up their hand when asked if they felt 'unrepresented' by the current political situation. There is a strong shared belief that politics (and especially party politics) is broken, that it has become a circus of lies, deceit, back-stabbing and divisiveness.

How can it be fixed or overhauled?

Solutions will not be found in our current system. Systems failure, systems breakdown and systemically embedded oppression are calling us to address root causes of our societal problems (not just the symptoms). Systems level solutions are now mandatory and require us to collectively re-architect our society and integrate our efforts.

Critical and creative approaches to narrative and structural change will be central to this Movement. Trailblazing social change is bringing together activists, artists and thought-leaders from around the world. We now urgently need those people and organisations doing the good work in 'parallel polis' to come together and unite to build a new movement.

Collective action in combination with personal shifts are necessary for each of us to undertake this type of heart-centred readjustment.  Critical Somatics and arts based activism can be brought together whilst exploring methods/frameworks for Systemic Social Change. Grounded through practical discussions for how we can all concretely scale up our strategies for critical and fruitful Systemic Social Change.

Structural violence and perverse system incentives are driving both social inequalities and ecological decline. This Movement is calling on The Trailblazers. It's time for all of us to Trail Blaze systems level transformation.

We are all inspired by others, whether friends, peers, authors, speakers or influencers, progressive local and regional initiatives.

Let's recognise and empower each other as 'Trailblazers'.

The Trailblazer movement isn’t (neccessarily) a political party, or even something that could be labelled as politics - it’s about re-imagining what's currently called politics as it should be. It places hope, truth, positivity and pragmatic solutions centrestage, as we co-create a national framework for change with potential to become international.

We envisage something way more fit for the times than dinosaur political parties. No longer Punch and Judy politics, which party to vote for, how to form progressive alliances.

The movement is about people, representing themselves, moving forwards together, underpinned by our common values:

1 Progressive. A society run by all, for all, grounded in common sense and integrity, questioning and breaking from old habits when needed.

2 Independent. Working outside the existing outmoded party political structure and tribal dogma.

3 Local. Respect for democracy at grass roots level, localised communities working within a global interconnected framework and connected by an overarching social network/s.

4 Empowering. Working for the good of all, creating and nurturing a participatory environment where people feel they have a voice and can make a difference through liquid democracy.

5 Humanistic. A greener, more empathic society moving away from materialism and profit as primary drivers, celebrating its spiritual elements and natural beauty, supporting renewables and working for peace through conflict resolution.

6 Collaborative. Encouraging complimentary skills and knowledge, bringing people together via mutual support mechanisms and initiatives which reward their own members through measured input.

7 Questioning. Questioning narratives, reaching out beyond our circles and bubbles, joining the dots but respecting the differences, bringing to the table a range of diverse viewpoints and experience.

8 Connected. A self-sufficient networked community that maximises technology for good and networking, enabling co-ordination and exchange, supporting creative commons and open source approaches.

9 Resourceful. Building collective wisdom through new approaches to learning and ideas development.

10 Principled. Making decisions based on our core values.

11 Fun. Always remembering to add the joker in pack ;)  What’s living for if not to enjoy life and all it has to offer?

We are collectively working towards a framework for real and radical evolutionary change. A framework is not easily formulated or agreed but we are actively seeking your involvement for discussion to realise co-created pragmatic ways of making these changes immediate and meaningful.

Here is our starter for ten, based on members input and feedback (this is very much a work-in-progress so please comment / edit / add) :

How would you vote if there was a general election in the next couple of months?

It was telling that almost everyone at Campout 2022 stuck up their hand when asked if they felt 'unrepresented' by the current political situation. There is a strong shared belief that politics (and especially party politics) is broken, that it has become a circus of lies, deceit, back-stabbing and divisiveness.

How can it be fixed or overhauled? There are a variety of initiatives and movements all around us working for widespread and wholesale systemic change, as well as the personal shifts that are necessary for each of us to undertake this type of heart-centred readjustment.

What is needed now, quite urgently, is for those people and organisations doing the good work in 'parallel polis' to come together and unite to build a new movement.

Together we can be strong and maybe there is a case to nominate the tag 'trailblazer' once again as a way forward. We are all inspired by others, whether friends, peers, authors, speakers or influencers, progressive local and regional initiatives. So maybe we can imagine how we might create a resource where we recognise and empower each other as 'trailblazers'.

We are collectively working towards a framework for real and radical evolutionary change. A framework is not easily formulated or agreed but we are actively seeking your involvement for discussion to realise co-created pragmatic ways of making these changes immediate and meaningful.

Each of these steps on the path are essential and inter-connected. Unless we start by looking at ourselves and the changes we need to make, none of the other parts of this eco-system approach are likely to succeed.

The Path:
